| Teacup Information |
| What is a TEACUP POODLE??? A teacup poodle is a terminology used by breeders to classify the size of a small puppy in the particular breed they are raising. A lot of breeders believe a TEACUP should be 8 inches and under in height and 4 lbs and under(3lbs being average!) in weight. How do I know the puppy I am buying will be a teacup??? After all we as breeders are not God and can't predict what the exact size and weight will be! Always buy from a breeder who has bred teacups for many years and the main thing is to not buy your teacup before 10 weeks of age. It takes experience and time to know how to recognize a teacup. A lot of breeders use the rule of thumb: NOT OVER 2 POUNDS AT 12 WEEKS AND NOT OVER 6 INCHES TALL!! This has worked for us. What type of things do I look for and ask about! What size are the parents (weight and height) FOR EXAMPLE: I have seen the smallest puppy in a litter at the age of 6 weeks be the largest in the litter at 9 to 10 weeks. They might grow or they might not grow much from 6 weeks to 10 weeks. I would also inquire about the breeding of the pup. FOR EXAMPLE: Is the breeder breeding father/daughter,half brother/sister,mother/son-and full brother and sister is the worst. This is considered to be in-breeding and with out experience and extensive testing (by a veterinarian) this can be dangerous when done. When in-breeding is done it also can weaken immune systems and can cause problems for you further down the line. Another questions to ask is how many teacups are in the puppies pedigree? Most TRUE TEACUP BREEDERS have sizes and weights on their pedigrees. We do not ever breed a female with out reviewing the pedigree of the future sire and dam. What I would want when buying a teacup!!!! 1. A pedigree.(Making sure of no inbreeding and we do not like to have champions in the pedigree.) Reason being most champions are close to 10 inches tall and have to be to compete and be a champion. We do not want dogs that tall in our genetics... 2. Health Guarantee. 3. A check up by a Licensed Veterinarian This would need to include checking hips, knees and bites etc. 4. References from prior sales. 5. Phone number of the Breeders Veterinarian! |
